Frequently asked questions
Is ExifClean free?
Yes. Viewing metadata, detecting AI origin, and cleaning images are all free to use in your browser.
Do my images get uploaded to a server?
Yes, briefly. Your image is sent over an encrypted connection, processed in seconds, and the temporary file is deleted immediately after analysis. Nothing is stored, logged or shared, and your original file on your device is never modified.
What metadata can it remove?
EXIF, IPTC and XMP, including GPS location, camera serial numbers, software tags, thumbnails, and AI generation fingerprints such as C2PA Content Credentials and Stable Diffusion parameters.
Can it detect AI-generated images?
It detects AI fingerprints in the metadata layer: C2PA / Content Credentials, IPTC digitalSourceType, Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI parameters, and the declared software. It cannot detect an invisible pixel watermark such as SynthID.
Which formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF and GIF.
How do I remove EXIF data from a photo?
Drop the photo in the tool above and choose “Erase everything” (or the privacy preset to keep harmless fields). The dedicated Remove EXIF page does the same in one step. Your original file is never modified; you download a clean copy.
Does cleaning metadata change image quality?
No. Metadata is rewritten without recompressing the image, so the pixels are untouched; the ICC colour profile and orientation are preserved.
What's the difference between EXIF, IPTC and XMP?
EXIF is written by cameras and phones (settings, dates, GPS). IPTC is the press/agency standard (captions, credits, usage). XMP is Adobe's extensible layer that can mirror both and carries newer fields such as AI provenance. ExifClean reads and cleans all three.
